National: Builders soon to follow new ECB Code

The new Energy Conservation Building (ECB) code is expected to be implemented from the first week of April.  As per the new code, all multi-storeyed apartments will be rated including commercial buildings, residential apartments, municipal buildings, industries, etc. The rating scales to access the energy efficiency of these buildings will depend on the number of stars acquired, one being at the lower end and five being at the upper end of this scale.

It will be mandatory for builders to follow this code. For instance, only specific material will be allowed to be used by builders for construction, The aim of the new ECB code is to keep wasteful power utilization to the minimum. In effect, for residential real estate this will result in providing residents with energy efficient homes. As per the government estimates, if the builders comply with the ECB code then the new code will help save around 25 to 40 percent energy. The major elements on which the new code focuses include solar water heating systems, energy consumption monitoring systems and lighting systems.
A Chandrasekhara Reddy, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) — the State Energy Conservation Mission, stated that, “As part of making energy efficiency and energy conservation (EE & EC) measures mandatory in all the major building complexes that are going to come up in the state, like shopping malls, skyscrapers, the State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM) is gearing up to notify the ECB code and make it mandatory.”
Favista’s Views: By adopting the new ECB code, not only will developers will do their part for the environment, but getting a five star can also win them the trust of investors.
